A Family Favourite Recipe: Nona’s Pasta Soup

Nona's Pasta Soup

From Our Farmhouse to You!

Family Recipe: Nona’s Pasta Soup ~ Our version

Our only weekly dish!! Every Sunday night, without fail… dare I try something else? Well, I’ve learnt not to!

Welcome to our Farmhouse Kitchen — where muddy boots are welcome, second helpings are guaranteed, and every recipe tells a story. Nestled in the heart of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, our home isn’t just where we live — it’s where we grow, cook, and gather. From our chemical-free garden to our dreams of one day turning this valley into Kenya’s first organic haven — food here is rooted in love, laughter, and a lot of chaos.

We’re thrilled to finally share some of our most treasured family recipes, starting with the one that never gets old — Nona’s Pasta Soup (our version). It’s warm, nostalgic, and lovingly served every single Sunday night at our table in Gilgil. Trust us, we’ve tried swapping it out once or twice… never again.

This is food the way we love it — humble, hearty, and full of soul. Let’s cook!

Nona’s Pasta Soup – For 6 relaxed people

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups pasta (the smallest ones you have)
  • 1 onion
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 sticks celery
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 handful mixed herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano)
  • 1 chicken stock cube in ½ liter of water
  • To serve – Grated parmesan (and maybe a little grated cheddar or gouda).
Steps to make:
  • ✨ Roughly chop all the veg
  • ✨ Boil everything apart from the pasta for 1 hour in a sizeable saucepan.
  • ✨ Sieve veg out
  • ✨ Blend ¼ (or less, if you like it more watery than soupie) of the veg
  • ✨ Boil pasta in left over water until cooked.
  • ✨ Add the blended veg (and more water if needed)
  • ✨ Serve with grated parmesan… Happiness in a bowl!
Fun fact: Tomatoes are also known as love apples
